Lanthen
The Bengal tiger strain and the city strain. "A muscular, yet fat furry tiger, with black stripes across its orange-yellow pelt. Its head is sharp and broad, and has large ears for hearing at great distances. They are warriors and adventurers, and more accustomed to life within cities."
They are the Lathonians most often met in a tavern, a barracks or a debtor's court, and the strain that has integrated furthest into Nu'uman society. A good many Lanthen have never seen a prison and would rather not.
Body
Six to seven feet, muscular and heavy under the coat, with black stripes across an orange-yellow pelt and a sharp broad head. The ears are the strain's whole advantage: large, set high, and the best hearing in the species by a distance, good for a conversation through a wall or a door.
The hand is the species hand. The Lanthen work around it better than most because a city gives them Nu'uman tailors and Nu'uman scribes to hire, and a Lanthen in service is usually the only one in the household who signs nothing.
Country
Cities, barracks and noble households in the settled kingdoms, and not much else. This is the strain a townsman means when he says Lathonian, and the one whose presence in a street nobody remarks on.
Society
Their hearing makes them superb at the work the noble houses actually need done, which is listening at doors. The Akkanar intelligence service is Lanthen almost to a creature. The rest of the species regards a strain that keeps no corridor and holds no key as having come down in the world, and the Lanthen regard a strain that has to live in a prison to feel employed as having never come up in it.
