Languages
Every people the Alverians made understands the Common Tongue, because it was built into them. Everything older or stranger than that has a tongue of its own, and most of them descend from the language of the gods.
| Common Tongue | "Built into them by the Alverians; so no matter what language they taught themselves, they would always understand Common Tongue." The Alverians did not invent it. Common is a stepped down form of the gods' own language, gifted to the Irugaine by Irus, and the Irugaine spoke it first. |
| Tyberian | A court tongue cut out of Common on purpose. "An attempt to refine Common to forget the past." The older words were filed out of it deliberately, which is why a Tyberian charter can describe a conquest without containing a word for one. |
| High Alverian | The makers' own speech, and a naming language before it is a spoken one. Species and place words take the A'Q prefix, which marks ownership rather than description. Aelathan is theirs: the ninth air, the element Vaeyar took out of the sky. |
| Nuta'el | The Language of the Gods, of the Earth, from the Fulatari. |
| Naga'esh | The tongue of Aezithis. Corrupted Nuta'el. Spoken by the Remoulded of the Void. |
| High Irugaine | Grown out of Nuta'el rather than built out of it, and the oldest speech still in daily use on the surface. |
| Low Irugaine | High Irugaine fused with Common. |
| Do'urssan Priest-tongue | High Alverian kept underground for rite. It is spoken now by priests who are repeating it rather than composing in it. |
| Vultarian | Spoken by the Vultari alongside Common. |
| Caelatari | "Ethers Tongue." The speech of the stars. |
| Fulatari | The speech of the worlds. |
| Dremnae | Naga'esh back-formations. The speech of the void's servants. |
The Alverian catalogue
The Alverians named their creations by class, and the names are unkind. The invertebrates are A'QSNAI VONIESE, "The Spineless Inferior Ones." The fish are A'QSIEM ISHFI, "The Cold Fins." The amphibians are A'QFOUEI EMBAI, "The Slimed Ones," also recorded as "the greatest and most disobedient of the Alverian experiments. Wisdom without control." The reptiles are A'QRIE TILESE, "The Cold Scales." The birds are A'QBIESH DOSIK, "The Clipped Wings." The mammals are A'QMOAR ALTA, "The Great Devourers."
The prefix is a mark of ownership rather than of description, and that is why three of the Greater Four have no name in the old tongue at all. A'Q- was given only to what the Alverians made, and they did not make the Omari, the Irugaine or the Thojar. They cut them open, bred from them and displaced them, and never named them.
Common, and the back door
Installing Common was not a kindness and was not a translation project. Common came to the world through Irus and the Irugaine. The Alverians took it, cut it down further, and installed it in every species they made. Every people on Nu that speaks Common is speaking a thing the Alverians can be understood in, and that was the entire point.
What survives of their own speech is short and hostile. "Tarksha! Vien-tokh sie kar sak!! BAH!" "Siekt? Giae tosh-ki, makvae?" "Vie-gehs!", which means "Vermin!"
Still unwritten in the record for this entry.
- Fulatari: nothing recorded beyond the name
- Eleven tongues are named and not built: Ossek, Ssevhaan, Ikhrun, Vor-Shrak, Xier, Thyl, Vultarian, ancient Do'urssan, the Irugaine secret tongue, the Thojar stone speech, and the origins of Common itself
