The whole thing in eight lines

• 1. Get in. Add the server in Hytale, then join the Discord.
• 2. Your first hour. Read the laws, mark where you stand, take the day's work.
• 3. Coin. Three coins. Banked coin is safe, carried coin is not.

1. Get in the gate

• You need Hytale through its Early Access release. Get the game itself at hytale.com.
• Add the server. Launch Hytale, add a server, and enter play.pyretale.com:9075. The button below copies it.
• The address drops you in the Hub. From the Hub you choose the Empires side, open to everyone, or the MMORPG side, which is whitelist only while it is built.
• It costs nothing. PyreTale is free to play. The store sells Premium Membership, founding tiers and cosmetics, and nothing that wins a fight.
• Join the Discord before you need it. Announcements land there, tickets are opened there, and it is the fastest way to reach a warden.

2. Your first hour

Six things, in this order.

• Work out where you are. /spawn or /crossroads takes you to the world's crossroads, and /spawns shows the crossroads and the first-comers' point.
• Read the laws once. /law prints them in game, numbered and kept. /tidings gives you the notices of the day.
• Take the quartermaster's provisions. /provision.
• Mark where you stand. /sethome sets a mark of your own, /home carries you back to it, /homes lists them. Do this before you wander off.
• Find the people. /muster draws up who walks these lands, by settlement. /journey <player> asks to travel to somebody's side, and /grant answers a plea.
• Take the day's work. /quests opens your journal. Three dailies and five weeklies are dealt to you, the first reroll is free, dailies re-deal at four in the morning and weeklies turn over on Monday.

After that, turn the map overlay on with /empire hud and go and look at the world. /wander walks a random road into the wilds, and /back returns you to where you last stood.

3. Coin, and how to keep it

Coin is a real item here. One Illian is a hundred Marks, one Mark is ten Talons, a thousand Talons to the Illian. Prices are quoted in whole Illian, and you pay in whatever you are carrying.

• Banked coin is safe. Carried coin is not. What you carry can be taken off your body when you fall. Bank before anything dangerous: one balance, the same at every branch on the server.
• Check your purse. /gold opens it and shows what moved it, /bal gives you one line, /gd opens the Gilded Dreams hub.
• Quests pay. Embers are the quest currency and gold is the coin of the realm, both earned in game. Quest gold lands in your Gilded Dreams balance.
• The want board pays on delivery. /wanted. Somebody posts what they need and the coin leaves their purse into escrow that moment, so bringing it in is paid work with the money already put up.
• Work somebody else's counter. Take a post as Manager or Stocker with /shop join <shop> for a daily wage plus commission, paid out of the shop's own purse.
• Sell what you find. /trade <player> hand to hand, or /auction for the auction house, which runs both bids and fixed price over 24 hours, 72 hours or 7 days.
• Check the price before you set one. The board shows a seven-day median once an item has five sales behind it, and says so plainly when it does not.
• Some of what The Hunt sends carries coin. Cows, chickens and animals have none on them and never drop any. Dangerous and villainous things may, and a champion is worth a multiple of the pack it walks with.

4. Ground of your own, later

A settlement is a claim on the world, a treasury and a weekly bill, and every realm starts as one claimed chunk and a name.

• Join one first. /empire list lists every settlement and the realm it belongs to, /empire join <name> joins an open one, and /empire accept takes an invite. If you cannot tell who is taking people, ask in the Discord.
• Read a realm before you swear to it. /empire info lookup <name> gives you the settlement, and the Atlas paints every claim on the land, coloured by realm, with the tier, members and holdings behind each chunk.
• What joining gets you. Ground that is defended, the shared waypoints with /empire waypoints, the settlement's home with /empire home, and its own chat channel with /chat settlement.
• What founding costs. /empire create <name> costs 1000 gold, and upkeep is charged every Sunday at two gold a chunk and one a resident. Miss it and building freezes across the settlement. Miss four weeks running and it disbands.
• Claims are enforced live on block break and place, on containers, on item pickup and on PvP. Inside your own claims you can hand out finer rights room by room with the Chunk Ledger, /empire chunktool.
• When the day comes, /empire claim takes the chunk you are standing in and /empire autoclaim lets the surveyor take each chunk you walk into.

5. The Hunt, and where you build

The wilderness is not scenery. A hunt takes a target, warns it, forms a pack out in the dark and walks it in, presses for as long as it has and then pulls back. There is nothing to type. You meet The Hunt in the world.

• It warns first. A raid runs in three phases and the first one has no monsters in it at all. That time is yours. When the warning ends, THE HUNT HAS BEGUN goes out.
• Nothing is placed on protected ground. A claimed chunk is thirty two blocks square and the full column, floor to sky, so there is no roof over a claim to drop onto and no cellar under one to come up through.
• The gate is the hole. Nothing spawns inside your claim and nothing is lifted over your wall, but a pack standing at an open gate will use it, and nothing is ever deleted for being on your land.
• Finish the whole wall. A raid aimed at a settlement forms just outside one face of the claim and picks a different face the next wave.
• Take the climb away. A ground monster stuck against a wall can haul itself up one block every quarter second, but only while there is a solid block ahead of it and two blocks of clear air above. A lip, an overhang or a covered walk along the top stops it. Fliers never get it.
• Standing together makes it bigger. A hunt is sized on the defenders within ninety six blocks of the anchor, not on how many people are online. Each one past the first adds three times the base pack again, to a ceiling of twelve times from the fifth defender on.
• Running is a real option and a real cost. The anchor never moves. Leave, and the hunt stays on the ground you left.

6. Your character, when Genesis lands

Genesis is the character creator for the Full Release and it is still in development. There is nothing to do with it today. It is on this page because one of its choices cannot be taken back.

• Species is forever. Class is not. You choose a species and shape a body, then take a class and your base traits. The class can be respecced later. The species cannot.
• Ten species, forty-nine playable variants: Nu'uman, Iziaka, Lathonian, Torkan, Boalden, Mekuhlian, Do'urssan, Eesha, Scan'uun and the Foulen. The creator offers a selection; the Codex holds all sixty six kin of those ten peoples.
• Two lives, one account. Every account carries two free character slots, and each one is a whole separate life with its own body, inventory, place in the world, level and story. An account can grow to five.
• You start where your people start. New characters do not spawn at the capital. Each species begins where its story begins.

Read the peoples in the Codex before it opens, so the one permanent choice is not made in a hurry. What Genesis does.

7. Where to look things up

• The Commands page. Everything a player can type, straight out of the plugins. In game, /stewardship prints the same list, grouped and paged.
• The Atlas. The whole world as a web page, flat or in three dimensions. Every claim coloured by realm, players moving in real time, and shops, banks, auction houses and quest boards pinning themselves as they are founded. It needs nothing installed, so keep it open on a second screen.
• The Codex of Nu. The record the server is built on: the gods, the ages and the peoples, with a page for every kin.
• The Laws. /law in game, or the rules page here. Not knowing a rule is not a defence.
• The Discord. Bugs, reports, appeals, and anything this site does not answer.

8. What nobody tells you

• Coins are items. Bank before you go anywhere dangerous. Banked coin is safe, carried coin comes off your body when you fall.
• Do not found a settlement on your first evening. It is 1000 gold and a bill every Sunday. Join one, learn the systems on somebody else's ground, and found yours when you can pay for it.
• Leaving is not neutral. /empire leave disbands the settlement if you are the leader.
• Upkeep falls on Sunday whether you logged in or not. Miss it and building freezes for everyone. Miss four weeks running and the settlement is gone.
• A road is chosen once. At the second rung a settlement takes Sword, Coin or Faith and keeps it. Reversing it costs the full price of the tree, a tier surrendered, and only a quarter returned.
• Your claim is not a shield. Nothing of theirs is placed on your land, and nothing of theirs is tidied off it for you either. What came through the gate has to be dealt with.
• Reroll a quest before you start it. A daily you have already put work into cannot be rerolled.
• A price with two sales behind it is a rumour. The board says so plainly rather than quoting you a median it does not have.
• Report bugs, do not use them. Responsible reports are rewarded. Abuse is punished under the Laws.

How to describe us

One line. PyreTale is a dark medieval fantasy MMORPG on Hytale, built on the lore of the novel Pyre: To Burn a God.

One paragraph. PyreTale is a fully custom dark medieval fantasy MMORPG built on Hytale by a small independent team. Its world, Nu, comes from the coming novel Pyre: To Burn a God: fractured crowns, corrupted lands, the curse of chivalry, and the long struggle between Providence and Doom. The server runs in two halves. Empires, live now in Early Access, is settlement management across hand built realms, with a player run economy, directed monster raids and a live 3D map of the world. The full MMORPG, in development and entered through the Genesis character creator, will let a player be born as one of the peoples of Nu and live inside the lore.

What we ask

• Call it PyreTale, one word, capital P and capital T, and link to pyretale.com.
• Say "dark fantasy". It is not a horror server and it is not a survival server.
• Screenshots and footage of your own play are yours to use. For the trailer, the logos and the Codex art, credit PyreTale.
• Quote the lore from the Codex rather than paraphrasing it: it is the record the server is built on.

How a realm is measured

Seven rungs, and the name on each one depends on how you rule. The same tier reads Metropolis under a Feudal Monarchy, Diocese under a Theocracy, Great Hold under a Tribal Confederation and Phylactery under a Lichdom. Rising costs gold from the treasury and a minimum of residents on the roll, and it never takes land away from you.

The Three Roads

At the second rung a settlement chooses a road and keeps it. Sword takes land. Coin takes wealth. Faith takes endurance. At the fourth rung the road forks again. Changing your mind is possible and deliberately expensive: the full price of the tree, a tier surrendered, and a quarter of it returned.

What a realm owes

Upkeep is charged every Sunday, and the same tick resolves grievances, advances wars, decays infamy and prints the Herald, an in-world newspaper of the week, filed under World, War, Coin and Crown. If the week was quiet it says so.

Ground you can defend

Claims are enforced live on block break and place, on containers, on item pickup and on PvP. Inside your own claims you can hand out finer rights room by room with the Chunk Ledger. War overrides all of it: a settlement at war with you loses every open right inside your borders, though members named on an area keep theirs.

In short

• Three minted coins. Illian, Mark and Talon, each a real item with its own quality and stack. Banked coin is safe. Carried coin is not.
• Player-owned banks. One balance, the same at every branch on the server. Set your own transaction tax, hire co-owners, place your own bankers.
• Shops staffed by NPCs. Fifteen lines of stock, a purse the shop trades out of, and buy orders so your shop pays sellers while you sleep.
• Work someone else's counter. Take a post as Manager or Stocker for a daily wage plus commission, paid out of the shop's own purse.

• The want board. Post what you need and the coin leaves your purse into escrow that moment. Bring what somebody needs and it is waiting.

The coin

One Illian is a hundred Marks. One Mark is ten Talons. A thousand Talons to the Illian, and all three are real items you can hold, drop and lose. Prices are quoted in whole Illian; you can pay in whatever you are carrying.

Shops that trade while you sleep

A shop holds fifteen lines of stock and trades out of its own purse. Fund the purse and it buys from other players at your prices; draw the takings out whenever you like. Every change is written into that shop's log with your name against it.

Districts, and the people who own them

A market is founded on your settlement's claimed land and climbs six rungs on trade volume alone. Each rung widens the district and raises the stall cap, from three stalls at Caravan to no cap at all at Grand Emporium. The landlord sets the tax, and a tax change takes a full day to land so nobody gets ambushed.

A price you can check

Every trade is written down. The board shows a seven-day median once an item has five sales behind it, and says so plainly when it does not, because a median off two sales is a rumour.

In short

• A hunt is aimed, and it warns first. It takes a target and an anchor it measures everything else from. The target is a player, a settlement, or a set of coordinates. The warning goes up before a single monster exists. That time is yours.
• The pack forms outside and walks in. Monsters are placed on a ring out in the dark, never on top of you. A wave can ring you evenly, come out of one quarter of the compass, or land as one loose front on a single bearing and advance together, and the bearing is re-rolled every wave.
• Nothing is placed on protected ground. Not a raid ring, not a den wave, not a den topping itself back up, not a monster being put back on the trail. A settlement's claim is the full column, floor to sky, and a hunt anchored inside one pushes its ring outside the walls rather than filling the streets.
• What formed outside can still walk in. The rule covers placement only. Nothing spawns in your claim and nothing is lifted over your wall, but a pack standing at an open gate will use it, and nothing is ever deleted for being on your land.
• It sizes itself on who stands with you. Defenders within ninety six blocks of the anchor are counted, not the player list. Each one past the first adds three times the base pack again, and a hard ceiling of twelve times catches it from the fifth defender on.
• Surges, champions and threat levels are switched on here. A hunt can send wave after wave, walk a champion in with them, and put coin on the heads of what it loses.
• Dens are real places. A den is a piece of the world taken whole and set back down as somewhere that fights. An armed one keeps a resident pack alive, tops it up as it thins and leashes strays home, and a hunt can be given one to march out of.

The warning

A raid runs in three phases and the first one has no monsters in it. Through the warning the target is told what is coming and nothing has been placed anywhere, not on the ring and not in the dark. When the warning ends, THE HUNT HAS BEGUN goes out within a tick or two of it, whether the pack landed whole, landed short, or is still arriving, and when more are still on their way you are told that as well.

The assault

The pack is placed on a ring out in the dark and walks in. Where on that ring is part of the hunt: evenly around you, out of one quarter of the compass, or as a single loose front on one bearing at one distance, which arrives as an advance rather than as a spawn. The bearing is re-rolled every wave, so the second wave does not repeat the first.

Monsters that lose the trail are put back on it. One that has been stuck out of reach for long enough is moved back to the spawn ring rather than left standing in a hole. The anchor itself never moves, which is what makes running a real option and a real cost: leave, and the hunt stays on the ground you left. When the assault runs out of time the raid retreats, and the survivors walk away instead of evaporating where they stand.

Threat

A hunt is sized by the defenders inside its threat radius, ninety six blocks of the anchor, and not by how many people are online. One defender faces the pack as it was written. Each further defender inside that circle adds three times it again, so two face four times the pack and four face ten times it, and a hard ceiling of twelve times holds it there from the fifth defender on. That ceiling is what makes a full wall of players a fight rather than an outage.

A second ceiling sits over the whole server: one limit on how many hunt monsters may be alive at once, shared between raids and armed dens. A map full of armed dens leaves a raid less room to work with. A wave that cannot fit everything it wanted sends what it can and the raid carries on; a raid that can place nothing at all ends itself out loud rather than standing in an empty field for an hour. Threat levels are on here, and so are the chronicle announcements, so the whole server hears about a hunt.

Surges

A hunt can be given surges: further waves that arrive on an interval while the assault is still running, each sized against the base pack and able to go as high as eight times it. A surge does not replace the wave it interrupts. If the previous wave was still arriving, those monsters are carried into the surge instead of being thrown away, so what is walking towards you only ever adds up. Surges are switched on here.

Champions

A hunt can walk a champion in with its pack. A champion carries a multiple of its role's health, can be set larger than the monsters around it, and is worth a multiple of their bounty. It has no rules of its own. It comes down the same bearing the pack does, through the same gate, and it is the one still standing when the rest have gone down. Champions are switched on here.

Dens

A den is a piece of the world taken whole, the blocks, the shape and the thing that lives in it, and set back down as a place that fights. An armed den keeps a resident pack alive around itself, tops it up as it thins, and leashes strays home. Its residents count against the same server-wide ceiling raids do, so the dens standing in the world are part of what any raid can afford to send.

A hunt can also be given a den to march out of. When it is set up that way, the pack at your wall came from a place on the map you could have gone and dealt with first.

Bounties

A hunt can put a bounty on what it sends, paid in the server's own coin. What carries gold is what would naturally be carrying it. Cows, chickens and animal NPCs have none on them and never drop any. Dangerous sentient things, villainous things, and non-hostile NPCs who would keep a purse may. A champion is worth a multiple of the pack it walks with.

Protected ground

Three separate things protect ground here and none of them can see the other two: a settlement's claimed chunks, a protected region drawn by hand, and a safe zone with its own buffer around it. Nothing The Hunt places may land in any of them. That covers the raid ring, a den wave, a den topping itself back up, a monster being put back on the trail, and the climb that hauls a stuck monster over a wall. A claimed chunk is thirty two blocks square and the full column, floor to sky, so there is no roof over a claim to drop onto and no cellar under one to come up through.

When a hunt's anchor sits inside a claim, the ring is pushed out rather than quietly failing. It starts wide enough to clear the claim itself, then grows by half again up to four more times, out to five hundred and twelve blocks, re-rolling its bearing at every step so one long edge of a town cannot defeat the whole expansion. If every band comes back closed, the hunt places nothing and says so with the numbers rather than finding a way in.

A hunt aimed at a settlement centres its ring on the claim edge instead, sixteen blocks past the last claimed chunk, on that wave's bearing. The pack forms just outside one face of your wall, comes in through whatever it is facing, and picks a different face the next wave.

And the rule stops at placement. A living monster is never removed, teleported or deleted for being inside a claim. It can walk in, cross the town and walk out again.

What it means for a base

The practical shape of it, if you are the one building the wall:

• You meet it at a boundary you chose. The pack cannot be placed inside your claim, so the fight starts where your ground ends and not in your storeroom.
• The gate is the hole. Nothing spawns inside and nothing is lifted over, but an opening is an opening and a walking monster will use it.
• One face, then a different one. A settlement raid forms outside a single face of the claim and re-rolls which face every wave. A wall that is only finished on the side you expected is only good once.
• Some hunts climb. A ground monster stuck against a wall can haul itself up at most one block every quarter second, but only while there is a solid block ahead of it and two blocks of clear air above, and never up onto protected ground. A lip, an overhang or a covered walk along the top takes the climb away. Fliers are never granted it.
• Size is not reach. A hunt can send monsters anywhere from a tenth of normal to five times it, and the body does not grow with the model. A huge monster is a huge model on an ordinary frame: it cannot fit through anything an ordinary one could not.
• Your claim is not a shield. Nothing of yours is spawned on, and nothing of theirs is tidied off for you. A monster that came through the gate has to be dealt with.

Who sets them running

Hunts run on their own here, and a warden can set one off as well. What goes into a hunt is written in advance: the target it aims at, the roles in its pack and how many of each, the size they come at, where on the ring they appear, how many surges follow and how hard, whether it walks a champion in, and what the dead are worth. None of it is a thing a player operates.

In short

• Two views of one map. A flat 2D chart and a 3D terrain view built from the game's own blocks, with a corner camera that shows a block's top and two sides.
• Players move in real time. Positions update every second and glide between them. Click a dot, or a name in the Adventurers list, and the camera follows them.
• Territory painted on the land. Every claim, coloured by realm, with names that thin out as you zoom so the map stays readable. Click a chunk for the settlement's tier, members and holdings.
• Everything else marks itself. Shops, banks, auction houses, merchants and quest boards publish their own pins onto the map as they are founded.
• Search and share. Find any player or realm by name and fly to it, then copy a link that opens on exactly the view you were looking at.
• The terrain keeps up. Block changes mark the map dirty and it redraws within seconds, so what you built this afternoon is on the map this afternoon.

Built from the world's own blocks

Atlas reads the actual blocks. The 3D view is real terrain seen from a corner camera, so you can read elevation, walls and roof lines rather than a colour-coded top-down chart. Block changes mark tiles dirty and they redraw within seconds.

What is live

Player positions refresh every second. Markers every five. Territory every fifteen. The connection dot in the corner tells you when it is live and when it is reconnecting, and the map recovers on its own.

One map, every system

Atlas takes pins from the rest of the suite. Shops, banks, auction houses, merchants, market wardens and quest boards all publish themselves as they are founded, each with its own icon and ring colour. Death markers and bed markers are deliberately left off.

In short

• Three dailies and five weeklies, drawn from weighted pools so a hard draw stays uncommon. Dislike one? Reroll it. The first reroll is free.
• Streaks that pay. Three days, seven days, fourteen days, each with its own Ember purse and a cache to open.
• Embers and gold. Embers are the quest currency and gold is the coin of the realm, both earned in game. Quest gold lands in your Gilded Dreams balance.
• Craft a notice board and put it up. Twelve pins, and anyone can read it.
• Post your own paid work. Request goods, put a bounty on a target, or stake collateral on a courier run carrying a sealed parcel to a board across the map.
• Quests written from the live world. Cull the beast that is actually out there, clear the den that is actually uncleared, hold the line on a raid that is actually happening right now.
• Standing you cannot lose. Three factions, and ranks past a certain point are floors, permanent once you reach them.
• Party up to five. Everybody's kills count and everybody gets paid.

The day and the week

Three dailies re-deal at four in the morning. Five weeklies turn over on Monday. Draws are weighted, so an epic is genuinely uncommon rather than a coin flip. A daily you have already put work into cannot be rerolled.

The Beacon of Ashfen

Nine chapters, and one of them makes you choose. Take the Oath of the Sword or the Oath of the Coin, and the other is closed to you for good. Finishing the Beacon opens what comes after it.

Contracts between players

Three kinds you can post: a request for goods, a bounty on a target, or a courier run where you stake collateral against a sealed parcel reaching a board across the map. Coin goes into escrow the moment you post. You cannot answer your own want.

Quests the world writes

Radiant work is generated from what is actually happening: the creature that is out there, the den that is uncleared, the raid that is live right now. Hold the Line gives you forty-five minutes to reach the fighting, cut down five raiders, and still be standing when the pack breaks.

• A name for each life. Your second character speaks in chat and stands under a nameplate as Name{2}. No nickname commands, no confusion about who did what.
• Atmosphere. Set the look of the world for your account, from bloom to sun to depth, before you ever step into it.

The arrival

Every login opens on the threshold. A cinematic crosses a dark cosmic cave, the PyreTale title settles in fire, and the world waits until you are ready. Watch it every time, or skip it and go straight to your characters.

Two lives, one account

New or Continue. Every account carries two free character slots, and each slot is a whole separate life: its own body, its own inventory, its own place in the world, its own level and its own story. The world always knows which one you are wearing. An account can grow to five slots.

The Loom

A full character creator in the Elder Scrolls tradition. Choose a species, shape the body, pick eyes, ears, hair and markings, tint every one of them, and turn your reflection on the plinth before you commit. Everyone starts in undergarments. The world clothes you.

Ten species, forty-nine variants

Nu'uman, Iziaka, Lathonian, Torkan, Boalden, Mekuhlian, Do'urssan, Eesha, Scan'uun and the Foulen. Forty-nine playable variants, each drawn from the lore of Pyre. The creator offers a selection; the Codex holds all sixty six kin of those ten peoples, and a page for every one. Species is forever. Choose with care.

The Calling

Once you have a body, choose a class and your base traits. Class can be respecced later. Species cannot.

Names, atmosphere and where you begin

Your second character speaks in chat and stands under a nameplate as Name{2}, so there are no nickname commands and no confusion about who did what. The look of the world is set for your account, from bloom to sun to depth, before you ever step into it. And each species starts where its story starts: new characters do not spawn at the capital, they spawn where they belong.
