Remoulded of the Void · “The Winged Terror”

Khar'shkahur

"A Remoulded dragon-kin creature with leathery wings that blot out the twin moons," with carrion eyes, a hooked beak-and-jaw, and a breath that is "a toxic shroud of green-tinged gas." It kills other Remoulded and calls them cousin while it does it. It killed Vie'Kamee.

Khar'shkahur is the full name of the one bound to Arthur. The form Karshk that appears in older records is a summoner's fragment, written down by somebody who did not understand that a word out of a Remoulded's name is a binding rather than a label.

Life

The greater of this class hunt the lesser, and they hunt each other, because every fragment is part of a Prince and wants the rest of itself back. When one consumes another it grows in size and recovers knowledge of its previous existence, so killing a cousin is not a quarrel. It is advancement, and the greeting is accurate.

The eating is slow and not violent once it has begun: the larger draws the smaller against itself until the two materials stop having an edge, and what the eaten fragment accumulated comes back over the following weeks, out of order and in pieces. A Keeper that has recently eaten is unreliable for a season, and the Coven schedules around it.

Frailty

It is bound, and the binding is the most dangerous private arrangement in the world, because the word that holds it sits with a man whom everyone watches. A summoner who holds one word out of that endless name can return the thing to the void, and being sent back is not death but something a good deal worse: the fragment returns to the undifferentiated mass of its Prince and everything it ever accumulated goes with it.

The word only works spoken aloud, in one unbroken breath, by a voice the Remoulded has heard before, and within its reach. Khar'shkahur is patient about this in the way a thing with no lifespan can afford to be. It has never asked to be released. It has, on three occasions the Coven knows of, arranged matters so that its holder was somewhere it could not be heard from, and then gone hunting cousins.

Regard

Every eating lengthens the name that would have to be spoken to undo it, so a Remoulded that kills its own kind is making itself harder to dismiss with every cousin it greets. Reassembly and banishment are one ledger read from either end.

The empty office of the Underway is its doing, and the office stays empty because filling it means standing at a gate that Khar'shkahur knows the way to.
