Remoulded of the Void · “Keeper of Gluttony”

Ghida

Gluttony is hers; Decay is Kthuji'ji'ujhmi's and remains so. Gluttony is the newest office in the Coven and was made for her, which tells its own story about how she came to sit again after being out of the old court.

Her domain is not hunger. It is the certainty that there will be more, and in a class whose whole doctrine is that the scattered will be gathered, that is closer to the centre of things than it sounds.

Body

She is the widest thing in the chamber, low and spread, with a mouth that runs the length of her front and a second set of jaws behind the first that works whether or not the first is busy. Nobody has weighed her, because nobody has ever weighed one of these.

Like the rest of the court she is Dre'mnae throughout, with no cells, no organs and no grain, and what looks like an anatomy is the same dark dense substance folded into a silhouette. The two sets of jaws are two kept things, in the way that Volak'lihkxar's three hundred limbs are three hundred kept things: this class wears its eating.

Society

She is the Keeper who negotiates with the cults, because a cult can always be persuaded to give a little more than it planned. The cults do the summoning and pay in souls, usually their own by instalment, and they also do all the work the class cannot: they hold the calendars, they walk in daylight, they carry messages across open country and they keep the ledgers of what was promised in what order. Ghida is the end of that pipe.

She is also the one who counts what the Coven has eaten and tells the Queen whether it was enough. It never is.

Regard

Her office was invented rather than inherited, and in a court where rank runs by mass and by office at once, an invented office is a statement about somebody the Queen wanted back in the room. What she did to be out of the old court is not written down and no Keeper volunteers it.

The photograph of her that circulates outside the dens is captioned with the wrong office. Decay has never been hers.
