Nu'uman · “Sun Striders”

Nu'umane

The Nu'umane are present in extreme, unpredictable heat, and they carry their own water. Their complexion is browner-orange, and riddled upon their skin are bumps which hold tiny amounts of water: true glands with a store in each, filled in the wet and drawn down in the dry.

Because their first territory was chaotic, so are they. Owing to the unpredictability of their variant's original location they share features with the other strains "but maintain their skin complexion due to the chaos of their beginnings in captivity," and they are the illusionist strain, of high deception and persuasion. They live sixty to one hundred and ten years, and they are the lightest of the strains, a Sun Strider woman running to a hundred and ten pounds.

Body

Browner-orange complexion and skin riddled with bumps which hold tiny amounts of water, a body that carries its own reservoir. The bumps are true glands with a store in each, filled in the wet and drawn down in the dry, and a Sun Strider in drought sweats last and longest of any strain and is hollow-cheeked and grey for a month afterwards while the stores refill. They share features with the other strains, but maintain their own skin complexion.

Country

Their cradle is the hot lowland and the tropical shore, where the heat breaks without warning into storm and back again, where the same field floods and cracks in one year, and where the people learned to say one thing and mean another because the weather did.

Tongue

The Sun Striders give one name only and add a second when the first is earned, so a Sun Strider's name states how much of a life has been finished. It is the shortest register in the species and the only one that can be read as a record of achievement rather than of descent.
