Fouloom
Tallest and thinnest of the kin, seven feet and narrow, standing above the grass line on stilt-thin legs, with a red-gold coat, a black mane along the neck and shoulder that raises when threatened, and very large upright ears.
Solitary to a fault even by the standards of a solitary people. They cannot call and will not be called, and so those of them who want numbers buy them, which is why the Fouloom are over-represented in the slave trade, the debt trade and the bounty rackets out of all proportion to their numbers.
Body
Seven feet and narrow, standing above the grass line on stilt-thin legs, red-gold, with a black mane along the neck and shoulder that raises when threatened and very large upright ears. The long narrow muzzle carries further forward than the base head does.
The height buys sight over cover and costs everything else. A Fouloom is light even for a Foulen, cannot fight a standing fight, cannot carry, and shifts its weight constantly on legs that were built to see over grass rather than to hold ground. The sprint is the same single breath. The silence is the same.
Society
A Fouloom cannot call a pack because a Fouloom has never had one. Those who want numbers buy them: bought muscle, bonded debtors, Gorklin out of the Wilder lands, Imps, the desperate of any people, held together with money, food and fear.
The polished bell-collar is the Fouloom answer to a howl they were never given. The pack is trained to it from the first day, and a boss will ring it in a crowded market for no reason, to watch the pack twitch and to watch the market watch. Argath the Gorklin Master is a Fouloom, buys three hundred Gorklin at a time from brood mothers who litter in the hundreds, has never had to raise his voice in his life, and keeps the collar polished because a dull bell looks like a poor business.
Regard
They are consequently over-represented in the slave trade, the debt trade and the bounty rackets out of all proportion to their numbers, and it is in that trade that the species has made its mark on the wider world.
In a tavern a Fouloom is what every Foulen is: charming, generous with other people's money, an excellent liar, the best source of information in the district, and sitting where the innkeeper can see him.
