Foulgahr
Larger than the base by half, running six to seven feet, heavy through the chest and shoulder, with a thick white-grey coat and a full standing ruff. The skull is broad and blunt, closer to the old Fould than to fox.
They are pack-callers and the living link back to the hound line, and they are the one kin that can hold a pack of their own kind. The pack lasts a season or two. Then it goes.
Body
Half again the size of the base, six to seven feet, heavy through the chest and shoulder, thick white-grey coat, full standing ruff, and a broad blunt skull closer to the old Fould than to fox. They are the living link back to the hound line and look it.
The weight is not free. A Foulen is light for its height and hard to hold and that is the whole of its defence, and a Foulgahr is neither. The sprint is still one breath long, the leg still cannot march or carry, and the extra mass is paid for in the same ten minutes bent over with the sides going. What the Foulgahr has that no other kin has is the voice.
Society
They are the one kin that can hold a pack of their own kind, for a season or two, by voice, and the ability is a torment to them: a Foulgahr calls and other Foulgahr come and then leave, because the thing that was taken out of the species is stronger than the thing this kin kept.
Elsewhere a Foulen who wants numbers buys them, and the bell does what the horn does for a Fould and the howl does for a Foulgahr. The Foulgahr do not need the bell and cannot keep what the howl brings, which is the same problem arriving from the other direction.
Regard
They are the closest to the Fould in body and the furthest from them in welcome. A Foulgahr at the edge of a fold, listening, is the saddest sight in the Verge and is also how a great many folds have been emptied.
The Fould will not run with any Foulen and will kill one found in a fold, and the resemblance does not help. The rite of the Silent Horn is kept in the hunter's half only, performed alone at the edge at dusk, in full, by a people with a voice that carries for miles and nothing on the other end of it.
