Crimson Horrors · “The Standing Wood” · Crimson strain

Sarnegh

No animal at all: a single Crimson-mutated tree, sixty feet, mobile at a rate of perhaps a hundred yards a year, with a vascular web spread under half a valley and a great many things living in it that used to be separate creatures.

Everything in the valley is part of it and does not know.

Body

The web is the organism and the tree is its standing part. Anything that has rooted into it, which over eight centuries is most of what has died in that valley, is now tissue. This is the sixth stage of the blight worked at the scale of a landscape: past a certain point a body stops being a body and begins to be structure, and what the hive then puts into that structure is rooms.

Country

The valley is fertile beyond any other in the region, the harvests are extraordinary, and the people are strange. That is the ash-country bargain without the ash and without the three good years and the bad fourth: a permanent red summer under one tree, paid for continuously by everything that dies there.

Life

Sarnegh does not move to hunt. It moves toward the volcano, slowly, and has been moving that way for eight hundred years. Nothing in the record says what it intends to do when it arrives, and nothing in the record says the Crimson intends anything by it either. It is going home at a hundred yards a year.
