Crimson Horrors · Crimson strain

The Kiln Sow

A blighted boar the size of a barn, running a body temperature that kills the grass she lies on, with molten crimson visibly moving under the skin of her flanks and cooling to a crust that flakes off and reforms.

She was in contact with the molten stuff and survived it, which almost nothing does, and she is bound into the hive mind and is one of the very few large animals through which it acts directly.

Body

What molten contact means in her flesh is that the crimson is her second circulation: it runs in channels alongside the blood, keeps her at a heat no ordinary animal would survive, and is the reason she cannot stop eating and cannot lie anywhere twice.

The first law of contact is that a creature touched by pure molten crimson, the mutagen in its unspent state, is bound into the hive mind of the great crimson god and becomes an extension of it. There is no recovery, no rite and no cure. The flesh does not burn; it is recruited, in the time it takes to fall over. Almost nothing large survives the event at all, which is what makes her worth a name.

Regard

Where she goes has been decided somewhere else. Trappers have learned that she is never in the wrong place, and that is the frightening part: not the size and not the heat, but a barn-sized animal that is always exactly where something wanted it.
