The Great Shattered

The Pendragon of the Penwood

The Pendragon of the Penwood is a Shattered, and is the only true dragon in the world: a three-headed rotten dragon abomination, attached to no Void Prince anyone has yet put a name to. Every other dragon in every other story is a Shattered wearing a shape, a Crimson-mutated thing, or a lie. The Penwood held one real one.

It was slain in the Penwood by Gaius' father, and the kill gave the Pendragon line its name.

Body

Three heads and rot, which in this class is not decay. A Shattered is the same cold, dense void substance a Remoulded is made of, run into a borrowed outline and hardened, and it grows only the body the fear described. What is behind the teeth of such a thing is nothing at all: the mouth, the gullet, perhaps a stomach if the tales dwelt on being swallowed, and then undifferentiated substance out to the skin.

That is also how it was killed. A Shattered is invulnerable in every part nobody pictured and genuinely soft where the local story said it was soft, and a kill of this size means somebody knew what the Penwood country used to say.

Regard

Older records call the Wyrm of the Penwood "a foul remoulded," and that is wrong. It is Class Two, not Class One: a piece of a Prince without the mind, not a fragment that holds a court. The distinction matters because a Remoulded reforms and a Shattered does not, and because the greater Remoulded hunt Shattered to reabsorb them.

Being unattributed, it is one of the small number of Shattered that no scholar has traced to a Prince. Nothing in the record says what became of the body, and a slain Shattered does not rot until the void or its Remoulded half comes to collect it.

Country

The Penwood is named among the Remoulded den sites, and it remains one regardless of the kill. Something else is at large in it now.

Around a Shattered the farming tells the story: the fields nearest go out of use, the road moves, the hamlet moves, and after eighty years there is a long empty bulge on the map that everyone navigates around and nobody can account for. Where one is killed the bulge fills in over two generations.
