Eesha · “Teeth of the Deep”

Eeshmorg

"Existing only within ruins and other various large bodies of saltwater, the Eeshmor are remnants of the god war, and live as intelligent monsters of the deep. They have made their patchwork homes out of decayed sunken cities. They can grow fifteen feet tall." They shatter underwater cities with their sheer body mass and hunt by sonar screech, and the Drowned Quarter, an Eeshmorg hold in the flooded ward of a city that fell in the god war, is the only one of their places the surface has a name for.

They never stop growing and they never come ashore, since the hips that fail a six-foot Eesha would not hold fifteen feet of one for a step. They are several feet above the rest of the kin and getting further.

Body

Fifteen feet at the oldest and growing, on the species' frame: one long flexible rod of cartilage from skull to tail-stump, which is a superb swimming frame at any size and a standing frame at none. The hips were a badly made joint on a six-foot body and at fifteen feet they are not a joint at all. An Eeshmorg does not walk, has never walked, and would break itself on a beach.

The head is the species' eel head at three times the size, with the same two sets of jaws working the same way: the outer takes the grip, the inner runs forward and drags back. The screech is theirs alone. They hunt by returned sound in dark water where the milky eyes are no use at all, and a sunken street with an Eeshmorg working it is a street that can be heard from the next ward.

Country

Drowned cities, and large bodies of salt water. The homes are patchwork, built through the standing rooms of wards that went under in the god war, and the building is done by a body that is too heavy for the masonry it is living in. What they hold, they hold by displacing; what they do not want, they take down.

Nothing hunts them. Nothing in the water is large enough and nothing on land can reach them, and the trained lesser-snakes of the SnakeFishers, which are the only answer anyone has to an Eesha, are a bog tool and not a deep one. The Hof, who have no way of making themselves expensive to kill, are taken apart from outside by the Eeshmorg and by the great things of the deep, and both learn early.

Regard

The surface holds no dealings with them and would not know how to begin. They are spoken of on two coasts as monsters of the deep and the word is meant literally and is nearly accurate, except that the makers' record is plain that they are intelligent and that they are Eesha, with the rank, the ledgers of the species behind them and the same conviction that everything has something in it that can be drawn out.

Among the kin they are the ones nobody can reach and nobody can summon. A land-going house that wanted an Eeshmorg's judgement would have to go down for it.
